What Is a Star Sapphire?

A star sapphire is a variety of the mineral corundum — the same aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃) species that produces blue sapphire and ruby — that displays a distinctive optical phenomenon called asterism. The Star Effect Explained

Asterism in corundum is caused by three intersecting sets of microscopic needle-like inclusions of the mineral rutile (titanium dioxide, TiO₂). These needles crystallise inside the corundum during its formation, aligning along the crystal\'s hexagonal axes — the three sets sit at 60° angles to one another.

When a directional light source strikes a properly-oriented cabochon, each set of parallel needles reflects a narrow band of light perpendicular to its length. Three sets of needles produce three intersecting light bands — the classic six-rayed star. Because the needles are microscopic and densely distributed, the reflected light appears as a smooth, continuous glow rather than as individual sparkles.

Twelve-rayed stars are exceptionally rare and occur when a second generation of rutile silk crystallises at a different orientation, adding three more intersecting bands. Why cabochons? The star effect requires that the top of the stone be a smooth curved surface perpendicular to the crystal\'s c-axis. Faceted cuts break up the reflected light and destroy the star. Colours & Varieties

Star Sharpness & Symmetry

The single most important quality factor is the star itself. All six rays should be clearly visible, straight, sharp, and of equal length. Rays that are broken, faded, curved, or unequal reduce value significantly. The star should be well-centred on the top of the cabochon and stay centred as the stone is tilted.

Body Colour & Transparency

After the star, body colour is the second most important factor. Vivid blue, pink, or purple bodies command premiums over grey or milky material. Transparency is highly valued — a stone you can see into as well as look at is much more valuable than an opaque stone of similar star quality.

Cut & Proportions
